How to make holes using Material

Is it possible to create a similar material in Blender? I tried a few experiments using nodes like Texture Coordinate, Object Info, Distance, Greater Than, and Less Than, but I couldn’t succeed. Is there anyone who can provide some insights on this?

You mean something like this. The holes are created just using a greyscale image (put together very quickly, so not particularly accurate).

NB. For this, although it says it’s a cube, it’s been cut down to just the one side, so is basically a plane.
