How to move simple decal (plane) along a sphere?

I am using a plane with a simple subsurface division and shrinkwrap modifier to add a decal on the surface of a sphere. When I try to transform the position of this plane decal the shape distorts.

Is there a method to transform a decal along the surface of a sphere without distorting it?

You could add a shrinkwrap constraint to the plane object, so it would align the plane to sphere’s surface normal.
Or just snap with “Align Rotation to Target”

another way is changing wrap method to project and use center of sphere as pivot point for plane:
