how to prevent cropping of displacement texture?

hi,
first: i’m a complete noob so maybe i’m trying to do something here which does not make any sense in the first place but ok (one big problem is actually that since in cycles bump mapping and real displacement are both called “displace” this is pretty hard to google)…

anyway: i’m trying to make an uneven floor so i have a flat cube with a subsurf + displacement modifier.
now i want to make the floor even more uneven towards the outer edges (the walls) so i thought this could be done by making a custom texture (the size of the floor) i feed into the displacement modifier. to control positioning i set the texture coordinates in the modifier to an empty object, that seems to work fine.
the problem is, that in the texture tab my hand-crafted displacement map gets cropped down to a small square. i do see some cropping options under “image mapping” these however do not seem to do the trick.
what am i missing here?
