How to render a single object, but mantaining the crop from other objects?

Hi! I am working on this animation. I want to export a .png sequence, with a transparent background, in which only the plane appears, once it leaves the back of the sphere (I plan to compose it with 2d material).

The problem is that if I try to disable the rendering of the sphere, the plane is visible the entire animation.

Any suggestions?

Make it a green circle and chroma key it.

That could work. But is it the only way? It sounds very problematic if I have a very complex scene.

Was just of the top of my head.
Look into the hold out shader if using Cycles.
