How to "reverberate" a light inside a light bulb? (2.5)

Is this the proper place to ask for this? I don’t know if what I want to do can be achieved with the Node Editor and some post-processing, but anyways, I’ll ask here first to see if I can inform myself about if what I want to recreate can be achieved before messing with later rendering tools.

And now the main character of my wonderings (it is on my avatar!). I’m making a model, some kind of steampunk firefly, which has a light bulb as abdomen/tail. This light bulb is made of 2 pieces:

  1. The external light bulb encasing (grayish, slightly transparent, reflective surface, able to distort images* if you see through it).

  2. The inner bulb emitter (grayish and very translucent sphere, non-reflective, able to distort images** if you see through it, which also it can glow with a light-blue tincture).

When the inner bulb is off, you can see both pieces, but when the inner bulb glows, the light which emits is somehow “contained” within the outer shell, as if the light reflected against the inner walls of the outer bulb. This light somehow ends so intense inside the bulb, almost hiding the inner bulb which emits said light. Of course, some glow ends leaking out somehow but not with great intensity, like the light casted by a big LED bulb.

Now my problem here, I took all this evening to play and create some materials for some other pieces of the model, but I’m somehow puzzled about how to make the outer light bulb to “adjust” to what I want to achieve.

I currently made 3 pieces, the outer bulb, the inner bulb and another inner bulb (slightly smaller than the previous one) which is the one glowing with the blue tint light. I managed somehow to make this light to illuminate the surrounding pieces of the model, like the elytron/wings of the firefly (and somehow it also went through the head and I don’t why it happened this ). What I want is the outer light bulb to “hold” as much light on its inner walls so that at least it doesn’t appear too transparent (like in the sample), but I don’t know how to tweak the material to achieve this, and I already ran out of ideas… My inexperience betrays me! :spin:

Lastly, the sample of the current render, along with all the options I used for the outer light bulb so you get an idea of what I did. Obviously all the options I haven’t touched are already collapsed and out of the image. Hope someone can give me a tip about this (I plan to animate this firefly in the future and I would want at least to make it able to glow whenever I wish).

  • I failed to accomplish the image distortion effect here.
    ** Same as above.

Stupid raytracing  Why I can’t get the crystal to look transparent when I enable that? Is it impossible? :frowning: My IOR is already 1.5 for crystal but the transparency is no where to be shown (not even when I made the Alpha to 0% 50% and 100%) and this Fresnel thing isn’t helping me (but adding more noise to the surface of the crystal, which I don’t want ).

Any ideas of how to solve this? What am I missing? I added a small copy of the leg sphere behind the main sphere to see any transparency differences but to no avail so far OTL

can you upload sample file

and i 'll do it in 2.49 cause i know where things are
then i’ll upload in 2.5 !

happy 2.5

but if you need to reflect light from inside face you need i guess to make faces with high reflection!
at worst add another inside face and make it transp and high reflection!

salutaitons

You probably need to increase the raydepth (the default value is quite low for anything complex)
