How to save UI layout in a blend

I’ve seen dozen of blend files that have a custom layout saved in. How do you do this? It’s really useful sometimes. I would really need to have the text editor open for a short guide to my file.

Create custom layouts from the Screen Layout dropdown at the top of the blender window

Set the layout as you want then Ctrl+U or ‘File / Save User Settings’ to save as your default

Didn’t work. What I’m doing is a sort of a tutorial .blend file. I’ve written a short readme type of text in the text editor and I want the text editor to be automatically open when the .blend file is opened. Sure I could just write the readme on a text file and ZIP it with the .blend but it would a lot easier to just use the text editor in Blender.

I’m not sure why you’re having trouble. Here’s what I did (this worked fine, and brought the text editor up ).

  1. Open blender (default settings and layout).
  2. Mess around with the default view layout
  3. Add a text editor, type in some text
  4. Save.
  5. Quit Blender.
  6. Open the file.

Pardon the hassle. I forgot I had “Load UI” unchecked. Everything works as it should now.
