How to see how many objects are selected in 2.8?

so in object mode, how do you check how many objects you just selected?

also, why the number of objects in the collections isn’t shown correctly in that little icon?

On the right side of the Status Bar (in the bottom), you should see “Objects: X/Y” where X is the number of selected objects, and Y is the total number of objects.

If doesn’t appear you need to right click on the bar and check the little boxes
