How to self union object?

How do I “melt” the object into itself like I draw in the picture (assuming it is 3d)? Are there any modifier or trick to do it rather than manually? Thank you.

Thank you, so there is no other way to do it? If I have many of these intersecting vertices in one mesh, I need to do it one by one, right?

Yup, self-union can be done. Something I was trying to do just recently. I took screenshots and wrote up a how-to.
