How to set texture paint to ignore white channel

I have no idea how to even word what I’m asking here, but its bothering me greatly and I think I need some help.

I want to take this image:

and use it as a brush texture on a surface to place bolts, but I want to ignore the white channel, so the metal under it doesn’t change to white. Is this possible? If not what would be the correct way of doing so?

You need an image with an alpha channel. Take that into Photoshop, remove the white, and replace it with transparency. Save it as a PNG, not a JPG, so that transparency will stay.

Funny, I was just doing some dishes and that thought came into my head. I’ll give it a shot and report back. Thank you.

Okay, so I have edited the image so it has a transparent channel, now I’m having another problem, when I enable stencil, and mouse over the viewport or image editor, the stencil is in a static position that isn’t very helpful, especially if I want to zoom in, I lose track of exactly where I’m stamping it because I’m too zoomed in, how can I fix that?

Edit: Or I can change the size, but then it starts to tile it and I don’t want that.

Got er all figured out, you press the right mouse button to move the stencil and shift right click drag to change the size. Thanks, Josephansen for the help.
