How to set up frame based animation for fluid simulation?

Hi, I’m pretty new to Blender and I’m trying to export a fluid simulation in a way that I can later make the exported mesh play the animation from frame X to frame Y (like you can with bone animations and such), but I can’t figure out how to do this since I don’t change anything about the water in the scene, I just let the fluid simulation do it’s thing.

I’m just using a proof of concept scene at the moment where an obstacle moves around a bit through the fluid (so I can tell the animation is actually doing something). When I export it to a .x file and make it play the animation frames through software, the obstacle moves around, but the inflow object is just hanging there doing nothing. What do I need to do to properly add the simulation to the final scene?
