How to set up kimono sleeve mesh for rigging?

hi! i’m planning to make a character model, in which the character is wearing a kimono. however, i’m not quite sure how i should set up the mesh… i’ve see it once before, but i don’t know if its personal preference, or the general recommended way to make it. here’s how it looked:

for those who don’t know, kimono sleeves hang downward from the arms, and flow. i wouldnt call them floaty, as kimono are actually quite thick, but they move with the arms, like any other long sleeves. certain types of kimono just have…really long sleeves. the type of sleeves im working with are about 3/4ths or half the long in my MS paint drawing.

so, since i plan to rig my model and do simple poses with it, should i set up the sleeves like in the photo? or should i just have them hang down from the arms normally?

There is no right or wrong answer to this, it all depends on what you want in the end. Modelling it backwards could be because he wanted the mesh to be away from the hips during the modelling stage, then he used cloth simulation to make them fold down. Another reason could be that it created more folds in the mesh.

But then again, modelling them downwards has its own benefits. Just pick whatever feels right to you, and adjust if something goes wrong.

As a rig i’m not sure, but if you intend to keyframe the sleeves instead of using the physics system, try to use a lattice to make small deformations on it manually
