How to view texture from texture node in 2.8

I’m trying to generate a texture to use as a density map for a particle system. I’ve not done this before so i’m trying to figure it out - so I could just be doing something wrong initially.

I’m using 2.8

I’m attempting to make the texture in the texture node editor - not the shader editor. I’m assuming this is the correct area since the particle system references textures specifically.

What I can’t figure out is how to view the texture I am trying to make. I can’t find where to have it show up either in a preview or on the object.

Any ideas?
