How to work without UNDO command?

Dear friends

I know this is not a intelligent question, but… Is there any way to undo the last action performed in Blender 3D? Or I must remember to save my job before modify my work? I say that because I have to reload the last version of the file always I make a mistake.

What´s the best way to produce a high-quality work reducing the errors occurance?

Thanks

This reminds me a few years ago when I bought Hash: Animation Master in one of my trips to SIGGRAPH. The program was so unstable that in the Hash’s site they had a recommendation: “Save often”.

while in edit mode (with the vertices visible) you can reset the mesh to the state it was in when you entered edit mode with the “u” key.
that is sort of an undo.
I have gotten used to woking without a “real” undo function and really don’t miss it.
I’m odd that way.

don’t give up on blender because you’re afraid of making a mistake.

blender has a useful save function,

try this:
with a file open (after saving it once)
save again in this manner
F2 (opens file selecter for file, save as)
numpad + (increments the number on the end of the file before .blend)
enter (saves)

so a file that was afile.blend
would become afile2.blend
then afile3.blend

numpad - does the opposite, it subtracts from that number

there is also control+o which will reload the last file, and control+w wich will save the current file

_______-
in the info panel (at the top, you need to pull it down) there are also options regarding autosaves

they are stored in your temp directory, for me that is:
C:\windows emp\

as is quit.blend which should be saved when you quit blender

Theeth has created a script for it, see this thread:

I no need undo in Blender.

:o
Undo?
Strangely, I’ve learned to work fine without undo… I really don’t need that so much, now that I’ve gotten used to work without it.

How do I manage to do that then? Well, I save often, and everytime I start to manipulate mesh (that I have in some condition already, other than the primitives), I duplicate it, so that if I make mistakes, I can delete it and start over. After I’ve worked a while on a mesh, I delete the un-edited one, duplicate the current version and start editing again.

undo? what’s that?
my hand is constantly hovering over ctrl+w or ctrl+s, i’m saving almost every 30 secs :o
it has an advantage though, undo doesnt help you when your program crashes. after a time you just get used to it, work more precisely [sp?] and you try to avoid mistakes… somehow.
in other apps it’s different, i’m undo-ing where i can :stuck_out_tongue:
undo is not really necessarry, but would be a nice feature.

i had the same feeling when I started learning blender (I’ve still got a long long way to go!)… I REALLY wanted an undo function, i was swearing like mad…

but I got used to doing what Jolly Gnome says, moving the mesh I’m working on every now and again to another layer.

so I don’t miss undo much at all now.

Might be an idea for the Blender developers to consider adding an undo, purely so people who are new to Blender don’t get frightened off before they’ve got anywhere though…

Personally I stoppedmaking mistaches :stuck_out_tongue:

shurely you mean “moustaches”?

If you want to try working in Blender with an undo function (and some others) try Shmender.
