Human body

At the bottom of this post I have links to 28 pictures of my mesh of a human body on Google Photos. I don’t expect anyone to look at all 28 but I linked to all of them so that people could look at the region of the body they think they could give the most useful feedback. Half the images are object mode and half are in edit mode. Although each image in object mode has a compliment in edit mode, the pair of images are not taken from the same angle.

Some things I think might be off about my mesh are the shoulders and collar bone (links #7-10). I think the arm dimensions might be wrong. The arm seems to thin in the image looking at the arm from above (link #13). The way light reflects off the abdomen (#23) makes it seem like it is not curved enough and has too many flat planes. It seems like there are places (like the top of the shoulder) where vertices are sort of bunched up that I did to avoid having to use triangles.

I have a subsurf modifier which is active in the images taken in object mode but inactive in the images taken in edit mode. The mesh is entirely quadrangles. There are 2865 vertices and 2796 faces.

The figure is nude but I did not detail private areas. There is no detailed genitalia and no cleft between the buttocks. The reason is I plan to use this mesh with clothing that has soft body modifiers and private parts will not be visible. For the specific project I’m working on, it would also seem weird to see the characters naked.

I’m not concerned that the face doesn’t look feminine on a female figure. I plan to make heads with different facial features to attach to the body and the head is just there for the time being while I work on rigging and so I can see the overall look of the body while editing. I plan on making a male figure from the same mesh where I’ll flatten the chest and broaden the shoulders. I still made breasts since clothing forms its shape around breasts. I’m also not worried much about the feet.

The whole album is at https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOPXQyGncBioqAVYT4kVssd7LnzdWceDwdj_AVxi9rTwRSLJYkg6zDAPeWxH0r2dg?key=Tzl5V0pZNFEwT19wejJ4aXhrNjZXTHQ2TXluX1NB . It has three other images not related to this mesh which I also made in Blender.

None of your links work.

Sorry about that. I edited the links and the new links work for me even after I logged out of my Google account. However, the link to the whole album still worked for me even after I logged out.

here’s my comments, numbered according to image:

  1. Arms look about the right length but are too thin and straight.

  2. The butt starts too high on the back.

  3. Back of the arm and back of shoulder could be filled out more (needs muscle)

  4. Upper butt too high, area below shoulder blades needs to fill out more (slope of back too high?)

  5. Maybe pull out that horizontal line of vertices under the shoulder blades a little to help solve #5.

  6. Bumps on back of shoulders don’t look right. They should be toward the shoulders/arms more. Also try pulling out the area under the armpits in front. More muscle in the upper arms will help.

  7. Pull the mesh out to the side under the arms to give some muscle to that area.

  8. Odd angle to judge from!

  9. Back of shoulders need muscle! Pull that area out a little.

  10. Hand looks really good! Make thumb less stubby for females.

  11. Crotch needs to be one edge loop higher.

  12. Feet look really good!

The workflow nowadays, which is much easier is to sculpt. I would suggest just learning sculpting techniques. Watch some videos and what not. Much easier to “sketch” shapes in 3D and realize the forms are wrong or not.

This is a pretty cool commentary on some guys doing sculpting, of course you can find human head sculpts as well.

Thanks for the feedback. I modified my mesh and linked to updated screenshots below in this reply. I modified the width and thickness of the arms and I think the dimensions are more accurate now. I made the top of the butt lower. I changed the back of the shoulders and also modified the vertices in the collar bone area. I moved the vertices on the upper arm out a bit to give the appearance of muscle but I’m not sure I did it right. I’ve also smoothed various parts of the mesh.

  1. Crotch needs to be one edge loop higher.

I am basing my mesh on an 8 head height figure and most diagrams I’ve seen show the bottom of the crotch to be around 3.7 (where 0 is the bottom of the feet and 8 is the top of the head) which is where I put the crotch. The next vertices up from the crotch are at 4 and above those vertices are at 4.37.

  1. Odd angle to judge from!

The purpose of that image was to show the thickness of the arm when it is away from the body.

The armpits are a little pulled up. When you add your armature, you’re going to have problems there with the deformations when you bend the arms. If you intend to always have your character covered with clothes, it might be okay.

The shoulders look a lot better.

The butt still looks a little too high. The side view shows that it might be the thickness of the body from back to front. Try pulling in the stomach and abdomen just a little, and bring in the top of the butt cheeks and bring them out a little at the bottom.

Other than that, it looks pretty good.

I also thought the armpits were too high but most diagrams I’ve seen of 8 head figures put the armpits at around 6.33, and in the figure I made they were

around 6.25. I’ve moved them down to 6.1. I might occasionally have the figure wear a tank top but mostly it will wear shirts with sleeves so shoulders and

armpits will almost always be covered.

I think it might have been the subsurf modifier making it look big. I tried shrinking it again but I’m not sure if it is the right size. In image #41 the row

of vertices I have selected are at z=4.6 (where z is vertical; the figure is standing on the xy plane). The z coordinate of the rows below that are: 4.5, 4.35,

4.13, 3.87, and 3.7. Most 8-head diagrams I have show the top of the cleft at 4.33 so it might still be a little too high but it looks to me like the right

size. I made another it smaller on a different mesh but it was harder to shape the buttocks. Link #42 shows the row where z=4.3 highlighted, and the rows below

are at 4.15, 4.0, 3.89, and 3.62.
