human face failure

I tried using torQs face tutorial and got through the edge loops part, but got kinda confused on the extrusion part. I’m a real newbie and my face I made was horrid as you can see,
does anybody please have some suggestions,

Not too bad for a first attempt. Face seems a bit narrow. To get more specific help on the modeling forum, you should show people how the model is built (ie: the wire frame) rather than the result. Set your selection mode to edge select[Ctrl+TAB>>Edges], set your draw mode to solid[d>>Open GL Solid], and do a window screen shot [Ctrl+F3] of a front view and a side view.

[EDIT:] Also, when you mention something like the extrusion part of TorQ’s face tutorial, it would be helpful (basically a time saver) if you’d provide a link to the tutorial. It’s been quite a while since I did TorQ’s face tutorial, and I don’t recall what the “extrusion part” was all about. So you save time not having to explain the “extrusion part” and I save time not having to do a search to find the tutorial to refresh my memory.

I have seen some of the other 3d faces and just don’t get how they make them so good.

Check out mr_bomb’s Adrianna tutorial (scroll to the bottom). Two hints to getting good at faces: use background images and practice.

Glad you liked the dog. He’s almost finished. Just have some texture painting to do. I procrastinate on things like that. A lot. :smiley:

The face tutorial I used is called A BETTER FACE TUTORIAL and mr_bomb’s tutorial would not load up on my pc. sorry the pic did not show up, I think it should show up now.

It’s a shame you can’t get to mr_bomb’s tutorial, it’s a good one. He is selling a DVD tutorial which is excellent, goes into much more detail on each individual feature. I’ve got a copy and it’s well worth the $30 bucks he’s charging for it.

As to my creations, you can see them here, here, and also here (the head is toward the bottom of the page).

As to your creation: you’ve got some good loops around the eye and around the muzzle (nose and mouth) but you’ve also got way too many triangles in your mesh. Here’s the problem with triangles: blender provides tools to make your modeling life much easier – loop cuts, extrusions, subsurf, topological selections, scaling, and so on, which work so much better when blender is dealing with quads. It is possible to do what you need to do using triangles, but it is much easier when you stick with quads.

Practice, and working through tutorials, and reading other people’s threads for clues on how to effectively use Blender. Recently I’ve started buying Blender related training materials: mr_bomb’s video, Bugman2000’s book on Character Animation. The on-line documentation has gotten much better recently, I attribute it to the Blender Summer of Documentation for setting a certain standard of excellence (or at least usefullness) for Blender documentation and tutorial writers. Of course, the old stuff is still out there, and some is great, but some of it is awful.

I’ve only posted one animation using shape keys on a flying dragon. There are three versions, and you may notice how the feedback I got from others here improved the work.

Try this tutorial. This is a remake of Torq’s original tutorial, with more information for Blender beginners.

I haven’t read it through but I’m sure it will clear up a few things for you. The tutorial is in a series of JPEG images so you may need to zoom in on them in your browser or image software.

I think you’ve still got edges in all sorts of wrong places - and triangles. When you’re doing the tutorials, you need to make sure what you’re making looks almost exactly the same as what you’re copying. If you have an edge going between two points and the tutorial example doesn’t have an edge there, you’ve done something wrong and should stop and sort it out before continuing.

Torq’s mesh looks really clean and simple - yours should too. Every difference is a potential problem and every extra edge you have makes it harder and harder to get it looking right.

Umm, Well migero, I have not had any 3d modeling expierience in my entire life, up until a few months ago when I found blender. I have not had time to use it much because I have been busy. Also, I am only 12.
How would you go about drawing in eyebrows?

david, you need to use more quads, and less triangles. this will allow you to have more control over the mesh. if you were to subsurface ( subsurf is in the modifier stack in edit buttons ) him, he would look kind of lumpy and wrinkly with all those triangles, but if you were to change them to quads, subsurfacing would make him more smooth and even. to change 2 triangles to quads, select the two or more faces you want to make into quads, and hit Alt+J. ( I think F might work too, not sure ). also, in version 2.40, if you open a scripts window, and look under the mesh menu, there a pretty good tris to quads script, that could save you alot of time if you decide to do it. I don’t know why it didn’t make it to the new release. also, when you make tris into quads, you usually end up with a few edges that are going the wrong way, which can be fixed with Ctrl+E, and selecting the option ‘rotate edge’.

David - For a 12 year old you’re doing really well :). Just keep at it. They say it takes a decade of practice to be at the top of your field, so you’ll be doing pretty well by the time you’re 22!

I’d suggest you try drawing, though, as well as experimenting with 3D. It will help you with proportionality and attention to detail.

I don’t know if I’m the one to give examples as I am just figuring it now too but here is a face I am working on using all quads. Also you may want to check this guys thread out and do his examples to learn about working with poles and edge loops.

I think you want to have edge loops follow natural folds in the face. That way they are a lot smother and easier to work with. Like around the nostrils, lips and eyes and along the laugh lines.

Hey davidaw, I think for a newbie it is extremely difficult to model from the perspective of detail and flow. Although in my thread I’m advocating techniques that are basically explaining stuff on the detailing level (which I have my good reason for it), I suggest you start blocking out form first. Always begin with what form you will like to have. Let’s call this raw form ‘the Canvas’. While working on the canvas, use those techniques of controlling loops and poles, and everything else will fall in place.

Honestly, I think that you won’t learn anything following those tutorials. What you are learning is : how to use Blender. Your goal is: how to make art using Blender, and that is possible if you know the theory of modeling.
