Go to the scripts window , click on the scripts button, in the UV menu, choose Save UV Face Layout.

go to the material buttons, and do one of the following:
hit TexFace to drectly use the texture as color OR
assign a new texture, as map inpt choose UV and in the texture buttons simply choose image, and as an image choose the same that you used for UV mapping. the advantage of the second method is that you can use the texture not only for color, but for any other attribute, like specularity, emit etc.
to make it more clear: once you have assigned UV coordinates, you can use them to map any texture to any channel on your object.
