As the title says i am a beginner in blender,i watched a few tutorials and i tried to make my own model,i would like some advice.
You need to fix the lighting. It would be better if you would change the position of your primary light source.
Hi,
I agree about the lighting - perhaps watch this tutorial for some pointers:
Stars and planet are ok, but a hazy atmosphere on the planet would help - this tutorial really worked for me:
it also has a link to some excellent textures for planets
I think you want more details on the back of yor starship - like a Star Wars Star Destroyer
It will be nice to have some tiny stars as background… and the space ship material or shader to be more metallic for some areas.
First thing I noticed was the lack of silhouette on the bottom, there is nothing there to tell me where the ship ends and space begins.
The second thing I noticed was flat materials and what I’m going to call dull geometry in the back where the thrusters are.
The 3rd thing I noticed was the lack of running lights on the ship, airplanes, seagoing vessels and even cars have lights on them so you can tell what direction it is going and what direction it is pointed at. This may or may not be a thing on a spaceship but it is something that caught my attention.
4th thing I noticed is there was no fuzziness of an atmosphere on the planet, on space shots of earth and other planets there can be seen the volumetric effect at play with the atmosphere that clings to the hard surface of the planet.
5th thing I noticed was the lack of a silhouette of the planet that was on the darkside from the sun. A star is HUGE, take a moment to look up eclipses of the moon and consider the penumbra shadow. but that aside if there was a moon in orbit around the planet there would be some illumination of the dark side of the planet.
i like the lighting. it is a realistic attempt. that really happens this way in space. what you need is a normalmap on the spacecrafts surface.
Most of all and most objectively you need more detail. Your spaceship looks like a little toy and your planet looks like a ping pong ball.
Not really, it mostly depends on what camera setting you would use.
f.ex. the earth photos from the moon are metered towards the moon soil, which carries a lot more energy than the earth, its why the earth seems to be in complete shadow.
Also, notice that in real pictures of space metered towards something bright, there are no stars visible, where in this render there are.
Either way, we are artists, and even if this is supposed to be metered towards the ship with only one primary light, the primary light could just as well come from the other side, revealing the spacecraft model, instead of obscuring it in shadow.
Alternatively if we want to keep this single light setup, the ship model needs to have more bounce light from its light sources.
We have to think about more than realism, otherwise i could just make a black cube on black background and claim its a realistic representation of a cube in intergalactic space.
In terms of the ship I think a lot of good ideas were already given such as more details etc.
When I first saw this the planet reminded me of Uranus (maybe just because of the color). I like the lighting on the planet but the lighting on the ship could use some more work so that it can be seen more easily- use multiple light sources. Back to advice on the planet. I myself have been working on trying to create procedural plants on my own without any tutorials to further my knowledge of blender cycles. From my experience I would recommend adding something as simple as color variation can greatly improve the look of the planet. I would use a texture to base some of that color variation off of. If you’re trying to make a gaseous planet another alternative would be to find an image of the surface of a planet in our solar system- NASA or JPL’s website should have something- and use that image as the texture for your planet. You may also want to add an atmosphere to your planet for a better effect here’s a good tutorial to take a look at by blenderguru https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Q8PwcDzb8Y
It is Uranus, also i am working with this program for about 2-3 months so i don’t have that much experience also i don’t have that much time you know and i tried somehow to make it more realistic, also i’m just a kid
Pretty good for 2-3 months. Took me a while to get that far. It’s good you are wanting to push it further. The focused critique section is good for that, and you’ll get plenty of advice on improvement here. (Even if it may sound harsh sometimes, everyone wants to help. Take a bit and read up on how to both give and receive critiques.)
The two things I would suggest working on are the lighting and details. The lighting could use maybe different angle, and some bounce light from the planet. For details on the ship and planet, you can either model it, or give them texture to show specific details or surface texture.
Good luck, I look forward to seeing more!
