I am making faces at blender!

i have a very intricate wiggly flat shape - no not me - what i am making!
when i select more than 4 pixels and click F - it says auto?
what is auto face making and how the heck do i use it!
preferably in the old version of blender.
there has to be an easier way of making an intricate shapes face(s)

It’s called planning. Think how you are going to make with the available tools before starting. If you are using an old version of blender it will be more complicated. For complex shapes try using curves

but curves still need faces?
i put a plane in front of the shape. subdivided and deleted the unvanted verts then just moved the verts to the right places.
worked very well
