right mouse is normal select.
You should be using default settings (not 2.7) and use right click select. Its how I am set up. Change to right click select at the top of the Keymap settings in Preferences.
Keymapping has changed to include the new things in blender.
Is your mesh set to be not selectable? Make sure this is ticked…
Are you in Pose mode for armatures? To select the object again you need to go back to Object mode, or Edit Menu >> untick Lock Object Modes.
I’m not sure if i understand this sentence… (maybe because i’m a not native englishspeaker ??)… You are using blender 3.6.4 with the 2.7x setting like so (and no other changes):
