I cannot apply transparency to 3d objects

I am truing to apply transparency to 3d objects in my blender project but I am only able to apply it to the material preview, while the real object remains totally opaque. ALl other properties like color, shader and the like work. Just transparency seems not to stick whatever object I use - I even tried a 2d circle for good measure - and changing the values of the other properties, as you may see in the attached screen. What might be the issue?

Thanks,

Option 1
Change to textured view mode and GLSL shading (in properties panel, shortcut N, under Display)

Option 2
In solid view mode, in the Object properties under the Display settings enable the ‘Transparency’ tickbox

Option 3
Change to rendered view mode

Thanks, but, as you may see, the display panel does not show either of the former properties in your message, while I have no cue about to implement the last suggestion.
