Good morning, Blender community. I decided to get back into modeling because the knob on my stove broke and I told myself I could make a replacement, but I got stuck—I can’t figure out how to taper the shape. I’ve attached an image of what I’m planning. I swear I tried selecting vertices, then edges and faces, and combinations of them all, but I must be doing something wrong because I just can’t get it to work.
P.S. I’m a total noob :V
You’ll probably want to select the outer ring of vertices, then scale them using the 3D Cursor as the pivot point, since it already appears to be positioned correctly in your screenshots.
If that doesn’t give you the result you’re after, try enabling Proportional Editing, likely with a Linear falloff.
Another option is to use the Simple Deform modifier in Taper mode, which should also achieve a similar effect.
Maybe starting with Screw modifier would be easier in this case.
If you edit only the profile, it’s also a bit easier to use exact dimensions…
I would recommend starting from scratch. You seem to have various problems with the mesh, overlapping geometry, probably non-manifold geometry as well… the current approach does not seem to be working super well.
Did you “somehow” transformed the upper part to the lower locations and now has overlapping geometry ?? Looking at the upper double edge on the left (face select) and then beeing this on the right (vertex select) ?? Also the center might be off..
Anyway: when selecting the outer edge: extrudeing it and then scaling (as mentioned by @TristoMenace ) should “bring out this” taper form like so:
Thanks a lot, everyone. It turns out I was selecting the top edges incorrectly; once I fixed that, I was able to get the little cone shape I wanted. Thank you very much. I do notice some irregularities, though, so I’m going to start over from scratch. Thanks!
