I could use a suggestion to make cartoon style steam disappear

I will be using it on top of a coffee cup. I could make it disappear completely, but it would be nicer if it were to disappear gradually, like steam does. Not in a realistic way though.
I thought maybe using the Build mod in reverse with Randomize. But if there is a better way I would love to hear about it.

Update:
I suppose there’s something not transpiring from your screenshot. Because I reproduced the material on a Metaball but nothing happens.
What am I missing?

I should have mentioned I am using Cycles.

This does not work in Eevee as set up. I don’t use Eevee so don’t know how to set up the scene for it but I am sure there has to be a way to do it. The Cycles transparency material is the issue for Eevee.

For this set up, the material is affecting the entire particle system. So the fading starts at the top of the rising Metaballs.

If you want the shader to affect individual Metaballs change the texture coordinate to object.
