Hi! I created an architectural visualisation and want to share with you. I expect you to be honest and give me as best feedbeck as possible. I can handle every opinion, even the worst. I want to learn more and more.
I was asked to document a building outside with a small terrain around. It supposed to be more technical than fotorealistic, but I had extra time and I made little bit more. I decided to model one of interiors (or half of it) just to show the effect from outside and inside. So in general for now, everything is like it s in reality. The owner has some ideas to rebuild the house and rearrange the terrain. I mad this fancy presentation with not necessary details, but it was too much at the same time and nothing is really done as I wish to. I know about something I could improve, but still, because I worked so long with this house and interior, that I can`t see the same way as you guys. I guess you see more things what look bad or can be improve, especially you who have much more experience than me. I am not so very young, but still I am quite new. I gave up for few years ago and now I am back. Please write, what do you think? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSBuX62bls4&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR3silTZt4aRV0lCvPZusrDT614DWzV8iT55UrBh4ZvG5joMmhNqJ5FP554 or here renders only https://www.artstation.com/kris1978
Looks quite experienced to me. Looks absolutely stunning if you ask me. Not biased at all considering I’m from very nearby
The few things I noticed:
- Texture repeats on the concrete.
- Too strong bump on the kitchen table, at least to my taste.
- That glass colbe/heater thing doesn’t make a proper shadow.
Things probably only nerds would notice though.
Very nice project. I think you may like to read this article:

It helps a lot to give more expression to your images.
Your lighting and modeling is very good. The first thing I noticed is the lack of attention given to the garden, especially at the edges of the property. Right now it kind of abruptly ends and transitions to the HDRI. Adding trees and hedges will help there. Perhaps even a glimpse of neighboring houses. Then a few more non-distracting plants in front of the house I think would go a long way. One other thing about the exterior is that the driveway is very clean. I would suggest adding a dirt map to make it look like it gets used. Maybe some puddles to reflect the house lights might be nice.
for interiors one of the most important things to do is keep your vertical lines straight. Instead of tilting the camera up and down use the shift value to adjust your tilt.
I hope this is helpful.
Thank you for answer CarlG
This concrete texture is my own and I did not photograph all the way, so I used tiling, but this wall looks a little bit like this. I was surprised myself. Too much bump, yes, you have right.
Kitchen table, yes I see. There are some furniture with this kind of bumpy surfaces, but not tables. I will change it.
The glass is like this in Cycles. I used principled shader and IOR 1.5. I did not like it first time I rendered it and I thought maybe if I use Refractive Caustics will be better with shadows, but it is not, no differance. Lighting is HDRI only and maybe some lamp (plane with emission) on the right side and in the corner under the ceiling.
Thank You Bastian. Great article! I will study this a lot. Yes expression is important. I have done so much alone that I did not care and did not know about some things I could make better.
captainkirk, thank you for that answer. Yes, no attention to the garden. It was not so important to the owner. He just wanted to have correct geometry of the surface, but still when I decided to put some plants, I shoul do it nice or not at all. My computer is old and I need to buy a new one. It crushes and is very slow. I wanted to have more plants and 3d grass but it was too much for it. I shoul use just planes with alfa channel photos. I did it with the hedge. I tok the photo myself on the place. I wish to use all in 3d, but maybe I shoul learn how to be smart with photomontage.
Yes, it is not good with the edges of the property and I did not show the wall of a garage next to the building. I can fix the driveway and make it dirty and with gaps some places. Puddles? yes, good idea It rains a lot in this area. Camera tilting problem. I did not think about it before. Just before you wrote it I got a message from Mateusz Wielgus from ArtStation about the same rule. Thank you guys.
Looks totally fine in my opinion. To improve the picture you may want to match lighting conditions in that place with real one (latitude and season), and make more various season setups (summer, spring, autumn, winter), so your customer will get 100% match with what he gets with real house.
Ha ha, I know exactly what you mean about crashing. I just did an exterior animation for a client where quality was much less important than speed, so I decided to do it in Blender 2.8 with EEVEE and had to deal with frequent crashes. I used grass planes with alpha and it worked out well. Better than when I tried using mesh grass and according to the scene stats ended up with 1.4 billion vertices (seriously, no joke).
My plan is to start with HDR photography, so maybe I will try to take some HDRI in this area and I will see. I really like hdri lighting. I know that the ovner does not care and he is happy with this what he sees but I want to experiment more for myself. I wish that Blender will have Daylight System as in 3DS Max or Revit.
I have tried EEVEE and it does not work on my computer. I dreamed about going with camera around the house, but the rendering 20s, even in 720p, 25fps will take much too long, haha. Blendergrid will give maybe some discount, but still it will be extremily expensive, not worthy for hobby experimentation. Yes mesh grass is crazy, but I like plants. Anyway I want to learn how to use plane grass and plane plants properly.
