I Just Cant Model Lips!

after about 2 years of blendering and feeling fairly confident about modelling anything non organic, im still having trouble modelling heads particularly the lips.

they always look “fish” like at first and any further attempts to improve them just makes them look worse.

i started on another head yesterday and have again come across this evil nemesis of mine. heres a collection of most of the faces i have made since beginning. take note of the horrible lips in ALL of them.

any help at all on how to model better lips would be appreciated, it seems like such a simple thing but i have spent hours trying to perfect them only to create faces that look like theyve just come out of 50 years of constant plastic surgery.

It looks like you’re trying to model lips on top of the face. That is not what lips are. The way I try to explain it to my students is this (I normally draw somewhat but I’ll try to put it into words):

  1. A mouth is basicly a hole in a surface.
  2. A hole in a surface basicly has two sides an inside and an outside.
  3. In this case there are also 2 materials, an inner material and an outer material.
  4. Lips are actually the inside of the mouth (hole).
  5. But to some degree (in some cases more than others) the mouth (hole) curls outward showing the inner material… which results in lips.

So use that idea as your method for modeling as well. Don’t make a hole then add “sausages” around the edge. Make a hole… extrude it inward so that it has an inside, then reshape it so it curls out somewhat.

Does that help at all??

hmmm, thats an interesting way of looking at it.

ill give it a try again, thanks.

A little knowledge of anatomy is always usefull when modeling people :stuck_out_tongue:
Nice way of looking at it, macouno

macouno, that description helped me too.
I was also making sausage lips up until now.

Thanks.

i had ur same problem. but recently i invented a method that works for me so my advise is just experiment with different ways without messing with the topology. and find one that u find is not to difficult but gets the detail u want
