I made a model, but I can’t get the armatures right, I did everything it said to do in this book (2.3 guide) but when I try to move the fingers it either looks really weird, won’t move, or takes other things with it.

Take a look at the ‘Best of Blender’ thread in my signature. If you don’t have them yet (which I assume), I’d recommend either the ManCandy or Ludwig rigs, they are both outstanding. Download them both and maybe combine the best features from each of them.
