I Need Help Using Blender for a School Project

Hi, I’m relatively new to Blender and need some feedback for a school project. I have to finish this quickly and I want to be able to animate the scene.

I’m trying to make a toony animation that mixes mostly 2D elements with some 3D parts. I am planning to add footprints later that are running across the path of a world. I’m having a lot of problems with textures, lighting, and the sky. How can I make the objects (especially the grass and path) look like they have more depth?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Ok im not a pro , but i suggest you use a normal map.
I imagine the lil planet is textured , its an image used to texture the sphere ?
So make a normal map of it in Gimp you have a nice normal map addon, google it.
And if you dont know how to add the normal map ,just ask or find some info, there are many tutorials out there.

Thanks for the advice! This time I textured it with only one path, but I’m still not quite happy with the texturing. Is there a way to make my image look more toony or more accurately textured? I’m happy to receive any constructive criticism.

Maybe use the displace modifier…
Made some planet with it :stuck_out_tongue: So you could see if that’s what you’re looking for :3
Since your’s seems to have the road in the same model
as the road, you shouldn’t get that ugly floaty road :stuck_out_tongue:

I tried using a normal map and I also applied a displacement modifier. What do you think of the result?

When I saw the image I thought “that’s King Kai’s planet” … anyway, your trees look flat. I saw a method where using 2 empties with the same image of a tree perpendicular to each other gave a good effect of the tree not being so flat. Although I’m not sure the effect it would have on the trees that are more towards the camera.

Another method could be using the spin tool i believe it’s called. Look up how to make a wine glass and you’ll see what I mean. Your trees don’t need much detail, so outline the shape, use the spin tool to complete the full 3d shape, then give it a toony texture.

Ha ha! I guess it does look a little like King Kai’s Planet.
I tried the method using the perpendicular planes:

The results look pretty good from certain angles, but not so great from others.

When I animate it, I’m planning for the camera to be more at this point of view. I’m not sure if it will look right like this…
But when I tried the spin tool method, I had lots of problems with texturing…

Anyway, thank’s for the input! I’m really grateful for the help. If you have any more feedback, that would be great! I want my project to be amazing!

Yeah i was afraid of those closer to the camera in that first pic being weird like that. But from the ground view it certainly looks better. What are the problems you’re having texturing by using the spin tool? I’m no expert of texturing, but try mapping to UV coordinates and play with the unwrap if you’re using an image texture.

Edit: And actually those weird looking trees aren’t that bad. Looks like a differently species of vegetation haha.

Here’s my attempt at the spin tool:

I think I understand the concept of modelling with the tool, but I’m not very good with texturing. Do you know what I should do to make it look like this?

I’ve watched lots of tutorials on UV mapping, but when I do it, I’m not sure when to add seams or how to line up the UVs properly.

Thanks so much for all the help!

First off, the base of your tree should be separated from the leafy area by marking a seam between the two. If you unwrap it from there both the base and trunk should come out like circles, or cut it in half with another seam vertically to flatten the whole thing. Then in Gimp or Photoshop position the image you currently want as the texture on there and use the tools to help make the pattern fit the way you want. For the trunk just use a mix of dark and light brown or whatever colors you feel will make it believable. Since your trunk is so small, the detail you put in won’t be as noticeable, but don’t just go slapping purple on there and pass it off as a tree trunk :stuck_out_tongue:

I tried adding seams, and I UV mapped it, but I just can’t get it to work correctly… I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.

If it gets too complicated right now, I guess I could just leave the trees flat and see what they look like in the animation.

What about texture painting or vertex painting? I’m not sure of the difference between the two, but I’ve seen some people use a stroke brush or clone brush to add a texture and it appears in the 3D viewport and the UV image editor.

Thanks for all of the previous help everyone!

I just have one more question for my project. How can I animate footprints walking on the path? I plan to have them run on it at a high speed (like a fast forward), until they run through a tunnel.

I think there are a few ways to make footprints:

Animating 2D planes
Dynamic Painting
Displacement Mapping

But I’m not exactly sure how to work each of them, and I don’t know if they will give the overall effect I’m looking for.

I want the prints to look like drawings running across the world. It’s similar to the chase scene the Emperor’s New Groove. Here’s a clip I got from Youtube:
