The extent of my texturing is bringing in a separated mesh from Sketchup into Photoshop to 3D texture paint.
I’d like to see if I have the chops to figure out how to create textures in Blender… but do I have to separate each piece from each other? This is the only way I know how. I would have posted this in the texture section but since it’s modeling (in the sense I separate to texture) I thought I’d post here… since my issue is more a modeling question.
Can I target certain faces within an object and texture? I’m trying to do this the simplest way I know how… hence the crappy model attached. I need to get through one model or I’ll fall into complacency and give up. :o
You can assign more than one Material to a model, and in Edit Mode, assign the various Materials to selected faces. Much simpler than separating your model into individual parts, imo.
Each set of faces assigned to a different Material can be UV-unwrapped separately if that’s efficient for your purposes. Textures (I assume you mean Image Textures) can be applied via the individual Materials slots.
For instance, in my model here (see first post) the top portion of the laptop with the LCD is one object. I go into Edit mode and select the face that is the black portion of the screen and I then apply a new material… this material always applies to the object as a whole regardless of what I select. Same thing goes for “Textures” it applies to the whole object.
Well, it does work, I do it all the time, so I can only assume you’re trying to apply a new Material with only one Material slot (channel) assigned. In that case, yes, it will be applied to the entire model. But if you add other Material slots (use the “+” button beside the Materials listing window) you can choose, or create (use “New”), another Material to fill this slot. Then in Edit Mode, select the face(s) you want to receive the new Material, select that Material, and hit the Assign button (which only shows up in Edit mode, btw). The Material in the selected slot will be applied to the selected faces.
I’d whip up a small demo .blend, but I currently have two instances of Blender 2.58 open, one rendering, one doing a physics sim, and my comp’s teetering on the crash-brink as it is. Maybe in an hour or so.
Oh my gud. You’re right… I never thought to make more than one texture until I could figure out if it worked… making more than one texture, works! This is super awesome. Thank you man!:RocknRoll:
