when you are modeling characters, or anything complicated, you should first come up with a concept model, to fix the proportions, so you should have like, a box torso, sphere head, and shoulders, with cylinder arms, just to keep it simple, and like I said, find the proportions, and then just get several reference images… and blend away, subsurf helps, but not on geometrics, so try to keep it somewhat high poly
