ice age: Scrat (low poly contest)

I decided to model Scrat from the movie ‘Ice Age’ for nfollmer and/or Dictonomymatt’s game content contest #3. I created a WIP to encourage people to do some more low poly modeling for these type of contests.

So, here is what I’ve got. I worked up some simple (and very flawed) geometry of the character himself. Right now, I’m not looking for critiques on the mesh. I’m looking for critiques on the basic topology of the character, so here goes:

Here are some of the references I’ve been going by (I’m not directly modeling them from these images) If someone comes across a good side and top view, I would thank you kindly.

Hey, good to see you are getting in on the contest. One note, the Contest was actual nfollmer’s idea. I am just taking over in his stead.

If you are looking for crits on your topology, why not post a couple of wire frame shots?

DichotomyMatt (oh, that’s how it’s spelt, excuse me). I didn’t post any wireframes because I was embarrassed by the geometry :o.

Alright, I thought I’d throw in one last update today. I’ve worked for the past 2 hours modeling and reworking my topology, I came out with this shape:

Now, you can critique the mesh.

wow.
this looks really awesome.
if you added some fur, it would look almost exactly like him.

Okay… What i would do if follow this(see image below…)

I dont know if it will help…You can send me the blend…I not gunna steal it or anything…I have my own idea…

Except that it has no arms lol. (Yes I know it’s a work in progress!)

Look’s good so far. I think that the jaw/nose area is a little long, and the ears are too small.

thanks for the comments guys. I’ll see about correcting Scrat here.

What are you planing for Hair? Are you just going to use a flat texture, or are you going to use alpha mapped planes?

probably just alpha mapped planes, I plan on mix and matching a couple of techniques.

Alright, here you go. I finished up the legs and arms and worked some geometry into the feet (turned em’ into claws). After fixing the model (according to your critiques), I modeled some claws for the hands; however, I don’t exactly know how I should fix them (they don’t necessarily feel natural). So, any comments or critiques on them would be quite nice.

could you post a direct screenshot of the mesh on his back, NOT a wireframe-render? Blender sometimes is not showing some wires, producing weird F- and N-Gons that aren’t really there

That would help us c&c your mesh

good point. I think that’s what lilgrudgeboy was referring to in his crit. I realized there were no F and N-Gons, but I didn’t know exactly what he was trying to fix. I’ll post a normal render later tonight or tomorrow when I have more updates.

sorry, but I can’t figure out how you could obtain the faces marked in green using blender. Is the mesh modeled in wings? aren’t those NGons?

blender doesn’t ALWAYS draw every contour

they’re there, they just can’t be seen by the screenshot - once he uploads a wireframe render it should be fine

the thing is, he already uploaded wireframe renders… he SHOULD upload screenshorts

To make Blender draw all edges in object mode, tab into edit mode, edit buttons (F9), in panel “Mesh Tools More”, hit button “All Edges”.

Ah, that’s good. Thanks, here is a better render.

I’ll have an update tonight. Any advice on unwrapping the model would be helpful.

Looks better! Now you got to make eye lids!

I think his fingers look too skinny and maybe a little short.

Use this tutorial for hare. It’s a great tutorial! http://www.paultosca.com/varga_hair.html

He looks good! Although make the tail skinnier. I know it’s that fat with hair but bald it need to be skinny.
