Going to make a short animation of a spaceship flying into shot.
Should I try to use real world scales for everything? I want ot have the camera in a sparse asteroid and the ship flying in from overhead.
i cannot get a good scale and perspective for the asteroids. I want to have a few close to the camera while being able to see a clear ring the other side of the planet.
Blender might struggle to work / render properly if you use real world scale, maybe it can work, but I recall trying doing the sun , earth and a satellite and it couldn’t work, even if the sun was 2 time smaller and the satellite was probably 1 or 2 km long…
So yeah you should probably try to cheat scale but it might be worth trying to do so intelligently, so maybe start with real proportions, and maybe do the planet something between 2 or 10 time smaller, and therefore 2 or 10 time closer to the camera , and the same for the other elements.
The goal is to make sure everything renders properly, and nothing become either too small like a size of 0.000001 next to a size of 100000 , something like that…
Well, that really depends on your shot and how much the camera is moving, how much you cheated the scale… you might need different elements, the ring in the distance might just me some transparent circles with a texture, like in this image :

And to answer your question, most of the time I prefer to do things in the simplest way possible, eventually if performance becomes an issue , maybe using a camera culling might help, but it’s hard to tell unless you really know what issue you’re having, therefore what problem you’d like to solve with that particular technique.
your new render is much better, you can increase the sense of scale by making the asteroids in the distance much smaller and the ones in the foreground much bigger, that way there is way much implied distance between them.
It’s even more obvious in your first render, making the planet look small, it’s better now but that can be improved a lot.
Try to make the planet closer to a real one in size maybe !
This can help you work with real scales and also maintain float precision. However, you’ll probably need to bake the ship details. For example, I set my unit scale to 100.
