Ideas for a Blender Art Gallery website...

O.k… let’s say there was a Blender website that showcased the “Best of Blender”… Like a Blender Art Gallery website.

Let’s say this site had the ability to leave comments and rate each piece by registered users only… with individual user uploading, nice neat categories to browse and multi language/theme support.

Let’s also throw in a category for “Newbies” so all the “beginners” can have a place to showcase the “best from a Newbie”…

Now let’s say that there was a panel of Blenderheads (about 5 or so) that would approve what Blender artwork was published on this site… there would be a certain criteria that each submission would have to have before it was posted on this site…

So my questions now are…

  1. Is this something you would like to see and would use…?
  2. Who would be the 5 or so Blenderheads that made up the panel?
  3. Do we even have enough “High End” Blender artwork to fill such a site?

not being generated currently, but some artits have put out a lot of good stuff. Hopefully having such a site will spur the idle people here (like me) to do some stuff worthy of it. Otherwise it would become quite a waste.

I think there is plenty of very good Blender Art to fill up a site

Most of Andys Stuff
Landis’ Airman
The Odd WC Entry
Alot Of the Blender F1 Challenge
The list goes on…

I think that Elysiun was meant to see the return of its Gallery section, but this was said ages ago and i cant seeit happening anytime soon

  1. Who would be the 5 or so Blenderheads that made up the panel?

I’m not so sure about this, it might be a better idea to have a system like Newgrounds, where things are uploaded but have a certain ‘Trail’ period, if they are voted off the site in this Trail period then they are taking off.

I think a more important question would be who would host this site.

If you find a host i am willing to help with any HTML or PHP that you might need help with.

i think this is a great idea and i would definitaly contribute to the site with images, and with the making of the site itself anyway i can.

it would certanaly be nice to be able to be appreciated by the world.

we could call it: 3D artworks (unless that already taken) or 3D art (unless thats taken too)

PS: L13 i think there should still be a couple of ppl who are making sure that the site is in operation all of the time and nothing is brocket, ppl have to report somewhere about problems right???

i would gladly be one of those “blender heads”

Sounds like an excellent idea to me.

Good idea… go for it!

sounds about like what I wanted to do for elYsiun,

if anyone is still interested in coding something like this for elYsiun (php and mysql) please e-mail me at [email protected]

[edit]

elysiun is good but not a lot of ppl view it except for ppl who know bout blender, we want more ppl to see our images so we need to create a new site that the whole world can see.

this sounds like a good idea
like raph.com only for blender… with a cool, professional and sleek design.

so:
1: yes
2: uuuuh… certainly we need people who know what they’re doing. :o
3: probably

edit: why not ask ton about art.blender3d.com or something?

I think a panel might cause resentment. Better, IMO, would be a rating system. Every time you viewed a pic, you would have the option of rating it, anonymously, on a point scale. Higher points means the A gallery, less points means the B gallery. Though I am not sure how this might be accomplished, there would have to be a system in place to prevent people from giving themselves or friends multiple high ratings. Anyway, if we did it this way, there would be no pointing of fingers and claims of personal predjudices influencing the panel, because there would be no established panel. I am not wise in the ways of HTML, but perhaps someone with more web savvy could implement such a system.
<edit> p.s., L13, you forgot to mention endi.
<edit again> and env. :stuck_out_tongue:

I agree with modron. You can try using deviantart.com rating system where members would vote and make comments about the artwork. Each artwork would be in different forms like you have in cgnetwork. Just my two cents.

i think with andy, endi, landis, nico and all the others was enough good work posted at elysiun.
if you have read the threads about the elysiun-galleries, you know that they shall be like promotion galleries, with best artwork done in blender. i think that would be a great start.

anyway, blender needs a highend gallery, because potential users tend to judge tools by the art made with em %|

seems great idea to me

Great responses…

First off… sounds like this is definetely something the community wants…

Second, I think we would need a Blender User panel that consists of Blenderheads that already produce or have produced high end Blender artwork. There would be a set of certain criteria that they would check off as they judged the artwork. This would rule out any “political back scratching”. Not only that, but the panel would be “experienced artists” and experienced with Blender.

Third… I already have the entire site almost completed. The way the voting works is a registered user can vote on any piece, but can only vote on a piece once. Plus, a registered user can only register once from the same email… (yes, a user could create hundreds of free email accounts and come to the site and vote their image through the roof) but, I can trace their IP address and delete any duplicate entries. If you feel like running all over town or having every family member vote, then I’ll come up with another way to remove fraudulent voting.

lastely… I’m thinking along the lines of all submissions being voted from Monday thru Sunday and either posted on the site each Sunday or dismissed. This will give the panel a week to judge and email each other their results.

This site is by no means replacing any other Blender Gallery website, but adding another place on the web to show off Blender artwork.

I’m basically waiting for community input and at least 4 other Blenderheads that would like to be on the panel before releasing the site. I honestly don’t think anyone will have a problem with the “panel”, these will be respectable Blender artists that we all are inspired by their Blender art.

Also… worse case senario… the panel doesn’t work out… we’ll come up with another means. Bear in mind, there is a category for Newbies so it won’t being leaving anyone out…

Hm,…I think you might want to call it something other than the ‘newbie’ gallery. For one thing, it seems like noobness is irrelevant, and it is the quality of work that is of concern. Also, if I thought my work was going to be catagorized as ‘newbie’ work, I wouldn’t bother to submit it. I suggest the ‘A’ gallery, and the ‘B’ gallery. Sounds much nicer.

SysAdm, is it going to be complete new site?
I mean, there will always be need for discussion, best handled through a forum. Will it have it’s own forum system? Or do you plan to connect it in any way to this place here, and if so, how?
I don’t feel like collecting accounts all over the web … but of course you effort is welcome!

I’d say pick up the Elysiun gallery project, gather 5 or so active HTML/PHP coders and blenderheads. For whatever reason the rebuilding of Elysiun stopped. I understand that rebuilding the gallerys was a tough job, but the “links” and “support” pages should be a matter of 1 hours work max!

Great idea anyway. Behind you 100%!

The site will be strictly for posting Blender artwork… It’s all PHP and MySQL for the database. It will never have a forum, we already have elYsiun for that…

As far as a name for a category for “not as good” or “newbie” or “getting there” I’m open for suggestions… I threw the Newbie category out there to give everybody the idea of having such a category… I need suggestions for a name…

As far as incorporating the site with elYsiun… I will be talking to Timothy about this… Maybe work a “mirror”…

If any Blenderheads out there want to be on the panel for the site, email me… click on my PROFILE here and shoot me an email… include a link to your Blender work… I would like to try it out with a panel of about 5 for now…

Just a small comment on the reworking of the elYsiun site (please don’t respond to this here to remain on-topic,… if you want you can start a new topic in the elYsiun support forum though).

Basically progress stopped because I lack time and motivation (mostly the latter), there are some parts which I really liked doing but most of it I just find plain boring and can’t get myself motivated for it.
I hope I can find some other people that can pick up where I left, more on this soon.

The Links system that is/was planned is a dynamic system where users can contribute links etc etc this is not a 1 hour job in perticular because it has to be integrated in a nice way into elYsiun.

The Support system will be the knowledge base but ALOT of work has to be done to it, both integrating it more with elYsiun (code wise and design wise) and updating the content of the knowledge base itself. People will start work on this soon.

Asfar as the gallery goes I will report on that soon, after having talked about it with sysadmn
