IES Lamps to Cycles

No, IES is ok - different standard. On that note, not even posted (max) example is correct (narrow/elliptical shape).
This is how it looks in 2700k (done with Lux). Observe falloff as it same as in diagram.

Thanks for your answer. My elliptical IES files doesn’t work properly with “Blender Cycles” (as shown in the screenshots).

My question is:
-does it comme from Cycles (some limitations) or from the importer.
-is it possible to use “Lux Render” from blender to render these files.

regards

PS
forgot to mention
To render IES lights you can also use Corona Standalone or Pixar’s RenderMan from Blender

Something seems to be wrong. I imported the ies file and this is the result:

Hello there, we are trying blender at the moment, and we join the forum thanks to raphael (see his post above).
Our goal is to do a job work, to simulate realistic architectural lighting on buildings (France).
We have a big problem with IES files (from some manufactors), especially the elliptical ones.
We tried on Windows and Linux Mint (Ubuntu 14.04) with last versions of blender (2.78c), either with Cycles or Renderman, and results are never good.
Our team is based on a lighting specialist and a linux specialist, feel free to ask us many settings :eyebrowlift:
Please find some screenshots about our problems :

Also, another example of our tests, Renderman is not similar to Cycle with 10° and 30° IES files.

@renzolight, lukas stockner (one of the developers of cycles), has a patch for importing ies lamps (for which many in the community are waiting anxiously, me included). you may be able to make it work for you (the patch does a very good job, afaik, but there are some issues with it regarding coding style and ui decisions, and that is the reason it is not in master).
i’m not using experimental builds, but if you have someone that can build blender independently, you might want to try it: https://developer.blender.org/rB82bcfb9b342ae261c1331fd4658229bc00f8531b

@oris, I have tried the experimental build (last version from git, built on linux mint 17), the result is the same with 2 different elliptical ies files (tried on 2 sides of the cube) :

[D1543] Cycles: Add Support for IES files as textures for light strength

Does anyone know if the IES texture node is coming to master (will it be included in 2.79)? Cuz it’s just seating there, waiting for revision… till when?

@burnin i’m also waiting impatiently for this. i assume right now lukas is mostly concerned with the denoiser.

@renzolight i don’t have conclusions for you. i’m also doing some tests right now comparing cycles to lighting calculations apps. the only thing i found definitely is not to use the curves option in this addon, only png or exr.

Hi! Is there a way to rotate the lamps around Z axis? It seems impossible to me…

strange. for me, rotating the rig rotates the lamp as well. (the lamp is parented to the rig.) although don’t parent the rig to another object, because that causes strange behaviour when rotating. (you can use the “child of” constraint instead.)

Totally broken in 2.79. Can you confirm?
Anyone knows if there is a linux build with the IES patch mentioned here
https://developer.blender.org/D1543

Thanks in advance.

Hi All,

Thanks for your work Madcello! I am keen to test it out but when I click on your filedropper link it just takes me to the homepage with no download option. Is the link broken or is there something Im not doing?

Hello. I also tried it by following this tutorial :

I used blender 2.79 and this is what happened :

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1XvriGJB7BjNLPBZ39Pr1vvUD5jhHpwEC

I don’t understand if it worked great, because I’m not so experienced.

Is it so difficult to have an additional native function to import ies files?

@Elettro
difficulty is not the issue. you need a developer who is interested in implementing this feature for a long enough period to actually write the code and merge it. lukas stockner started an implementation, but didn’t finish the job for various reasons.

Hi Oris.
I understand.
Too bad, because this implementation I have been waiting for a long time.
The work done by Lukas is admirable, I am sorry that the add-ons were not more developed, at least to correct those known problems.

@Elettro
i’m also impatiently awaiting this.
without this add-on i probably would not be able to use blender in my work.

Small updates from time to time but it seems we’re getting closer and closer to a final patch for IES Lights in Cycles.

With 2.79b I get light to emit, but no pattern for the light.
