If you haven't seen me around lately it's because....

I’m in the process of setting up my new computer (with the help of my brother who knows a lot more about them than I do).

The new comp is still modest by pro standards but it came in under buget
and it’s a respectable upgrade from my old one. To keep the cost low I got a bare bones package which included a Raidmax ATX case, 350 W.
power supply, Elitegroup mini mainboard, 256 megs of ram, and an Intel 1.8 GHz Celeron proccessor. I also found an 80 GIG harddrive for $89 after rebate bringing the total cost so far to about $300. The next thing I want to get is a CDRW. Right now I’m using an old cdrom to load software. I already have all the other periferals.

This thing blows my old comp away in every way you can name!
I have Windows XP Professional installed on it. It’s strange. I’m use to '98.

ooOOoo very nice. i need to upgrade <already!> i only have a duron 1.3 ghz processor, but ill need a new mother board. and a vid card. and a monitor. and mouse. ARGUH! ah well, it’ll all come in the end.mplus mine only cost me $500 NZ <about 250 US?>

have fun

GFX

It sounds like a nice upgrade. Are you going to get seti running again??

Yeah, I’ll have SETI running again soon. I have the old comp networked to my new one so I can transfer files I want to keep to the new hard drive. Right now I have two partitions on the new HD, 60 gigs for programs, and 20 for datafiles. The hope is that I won’t need to defrag the whole thing every time I do maintainance. Just the part with the datafiles.

One thing bugs me though.
I can’t figure out where the power indicator LED on the case plugs into the motherboard!

Where did you get the motherboard?

dont tell him, dont tell him!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

sigh i feel like i only just got my pc and it’s already very out of date sigh

I’ve got that feeling too - one comp’s almost six years old, the other one’s eight year’s old (it was fun getting slackware linux on it - I barely had room to make a one-gig root partition  Not only that, it took 14 minutes to download Yafray 'cuz it had to copy the whole file from swap).

Congrats rwv! That sounds like a nice box. Just curious, what graphics card do you have (and is it mobo/AGP/PCI)?

I got it and everthing above at a computer show and sale.

I also got a floppy drive there.

Right now I’m using the onboard graphics chipset. (Savag4 with 32 mb shared memory).
But it can use an AGP or PCI graphics card. I have a PCI GeForce II card but I think I’ll end up getting an AGP card. (What’s a good one?)

Also It can use SD or DDRRAM. Is DDR worth the price or should I wait and just stick my other ram card in it and have 512 mb of SDRAM?

DDR is only like 10 - 12% increase

but its still cooler.
