I'm a brand new Blender user

Hello, Everyone.

I’m sure you all must have heard this one before, but at the risk of being intially considered a moron, here goes:

I am looking “all over the place” for the Beginners Intro to this thing. I have read all the advice about “search the knowledge base before asking a question”, and I have searched until I’m sick of it! All I find in my searches are tutorials about how to stand upside down and juggle, but nothing that tells me what to do first when I start the program.

I had, actually started to learn Blender about a month ago, and I was making some slow progress, but that was 2.27. I just downloaded and installed 2.28 and what do I find? Whahhk! - a cube in the middle of the workspace that I that I cannot delete!

Now I guess I have to start all over again, but I can’t find anything about Blender 2.28 - Just a lot of stuff two and three and four years old.

Please, my new friends, where, oh where do I learn to begin?

Thank you.
regards,
grraphecor

I found that even older resources are useful now that I started learning Blender. I got The Blender Book, which although is two or so years old, provides a great introduction to blender. I’ve been using it as a reference, playing around in blender, refering back to it, and reading different chapters. I also found it good to just read some internet tutorials, and slowly learn all of the hotkeys.

Hope that helped,

My Advice-

Find a good interface tutorial, go through it- mabe find 2 if you still don’t understand it.

Look up blender keyshortcuts- download and print it out.

DO a simple modelling tutorial.

Generally do tutorials that are in the area of your desired skills.

Once you are passed the initial stage learn about these things- I think they are pretty cool.

  • Duplicating with alt+D (Linked dupe)
  • DupliVerts (Place one object on every vert of another object)
  • Dupliframes (Make an object exist at every point in its animated path- all at once- good for fences)
  • Learn how to use the bevel tool.
  • Learn UV texture mapping and never look back
  • Make frends with other blender users ; )
  • Get a 3 button optical wheel mouse

Thats it.

Follow the thread in my sig.
