I'm Calling Her "Leila"

Hey, guys! Nice to be back. (I’m not sure if you’ve noticed me gone --total newbie here )

Anyway, I’m currently doing a personal project, just for fun. Here she is:

I’m calling her Leila coz I’ve grown tires of calling my projects “CG girl” or “Another CG Girl”. Girls have names and I’m giving her one. She’s not yet finished and I wanna know what you guys think.

Anyway, here is the progress so far…
I started with this one, the very first render:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af41/ouro898/Project%20Leila/01_with_SSS.png
I haven’t fixed the diffuse bump maps yet here.

Here’s the next render:

Here, I added ray tracing transparency on the eye lens. I also added subsurface scattering on her skin. The eyelashes are crappy because I had the ramp turned the other way around.

Here, I added a “smile” shape key:

…but I figured it’s not gonna work. I don’t know why but I’m too crappy creating “smile” shape keys.

The latest render I made was the first one, with the hair. Tell me what you guys think because I wanna improve on this realistic modeling thing. I’ve been modeling for quite some time now but I feel like I’m not getting any better so I NEED YOUR HELP ON THIS.

Please leave any comments, critiques, and suggestions. Thanks.

PS
You can see the rest of the progress and renders here: Icey Cooley’s Projects

Here’s another render of her with a Hemi Light substituted to a Spot Light as a Fill Light.
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af41/ouro898/Project%20Leila/19_hemi_light_added.png

I like the way the Hemi Light lights up her face. It takes away the faulty shadows around it.

Here’s the setup of my scene rendered from 3d viewport.
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af41/ouro898/Project%20Leila/19_setup_render_from_3dviewport_with_labels-1.png

The Fill Light was previously a Spot Light.

Right now I’m thinking about re-doing her hair or just tweaking it. I’m not sure yet what to do with it.

Stay tuned for the next progress or visit Icey-Cooley’s Projects blog.

I see you are very interested in creating 3d girls. So am I, and I have also created one.
That’s why I appreciate your motivation becouse I know that a cg girl would take all your time…if she could (I did not try yet, but I think it’s easier to model a supercar, and it’s less time consuming) .

Sakura is the best of your girls. She’s nice.

These are my advices:

  1. If you don’t know what to do with Leila, do not look at her for a month or two. Doing this, it realy helps. When you will see her again, you will understand by yourself what you did right or wrong. That’s how I did with my 3d girl and so I could improve her.
2.Try to model separate parts of the human face, first off all: eye, nose, ear, and study a little more anatomy fot the artists.
  2. Keep working on many diferent human heads simultaneously and compare them, you will understand how to make a fine topology, after a time of (hard) work.
  3. Look for many reference images and use them for your models.

Thanks for the advice. I get my motivation whenever I’m doing nothing. Well, mostly I get it from those moments.:eyebrowlift2: I definitely agree with you on the references although it’s hard to get one a clean one, especially if I’m modeling a famous actress because she has different expressions on each photo. I can’t make shape keys to every expression on every picture just to get the face topology right. Generally, I feel that the workflow will get a lot messy that way. I’ve tried modeling a face using a reference picture, though, only in front view. It got messy. :frowning: I’ll try it one time if I find a good reference picture. Some point me to 3d.sk but I haven’t looked at it yet.

Anyway, here’s another update of Leila:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af41/ouro898/Project%20Leila/20_remade_hair_tweaked_face.png

I tweaked the face again and remade the hair because her previous hair wasn’t looking that great. This render has an SSS applied and Ambient Occlusion turned on. I don’t know what to do with the white outline on her right cheek. It seems the hair is doing it. I thought I solved it but I guess I was wrong.:frowning: This isn’t final, yet. The hair still doesn’t look right.

Here’s another update:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af41/ouro898/Project%20Leila/22_artifacts_gone_with_plane_BG.png
The artifacts disappeared when I put a plane backdrop.

Here’s another one:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af41/ouro898/Project%20Leila/23_dof_effect_with_dark_grey_backdrop.png
Here, I added a Depth of Field or DoF and some blur. I still have no idea what to put on her background so for now that should serve as her artificial background.

Been having some issues with the face, though. I want the textures to appear more crispier than this. I haven’t messed with the lights yet. Maybe I’ll try that first before doing anything with the textures.

This is looking good, you definitely need some more work to make her pretty. I know exactly what you mean about the difficulty of finding good reference with celebrities. My method is to take all the different photos of the face that I can find, and create a montage/collage of all of them on one picture. I cut the background out tracing the form with my eraser. It looks creepy, and your friends will think you are a stalker, but it will help you understand the shapes of the face, and the fine details that make up their likeness.

Then with your montage in front of you, draw the perspective views that you need, I usually just do front and side profile. At this point your creation will take a life and personality of it’s own, since you are drawing what you see, then it is truly art (my definition of art is: “A human’s interpretation of a subject, represented in a visual media”). When you use this method, you are not simply tracing the form. If that were art, then the best job would be done by a 3d scanner, not a human.

Here’s another update:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af41/ouro898/Project%20Leila/24_fixed_textures.png

I just fixed the textures, added and some blemishes and dark spots so she wouldn’t look like a mannequin.

@3dementia,
Yeah I’ve tried that but it also didn’t work. I know using reference pictures is important and I guess I’ll be doing that by the next project but for now I’ll finish this first. Thanks for the advice, I’ll keep that in mind.

Here’s another update:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af41/ouro898/Project%20Leila/final_render_large.png
Right here, I played with the lighting some more until I got the right feel.

http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af41/ouro898/Project%20Leila/final_render_large_blender_retouch.png
…then I used the render above this on a new .blend file and played with the color curves in the node editor to achieve something like this. The shadows in the nostrils aren’t right if you look at it…

http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af41/ouro898/Project%20Leila/final_render_large_gimp_retouch.png
…so here I fixed it and added a background image. I used Gimp for the retouches. Her eyes looks flat here…

http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af41/ouro898/Project%20Leila/final_render_large_gimp_retouch-1.png
…so I’ve decided to give them reflections, as you can see here. I also only used Gimp for the eye reflections because I don’t wanna render and wait for another 10 minutes just to get an eye reflection.

So there you go, I hope you like her. I guess I’ll be posting her to the Finished Works thread or something like that here. Thanks for following.

It’s look like Segolene Royal, a french woman politician.

http://infos-tele.fr/photos/segolene-royal.jpg
My God, she does look a bit like her without the wrinkles.

Segolene Royal : she is in the starting-blocks for next prédident elections in France.

Here’s the latest update (shouldn’t have posted on the Comments & Critiques thread yet):
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af41/ouro898/Project%20Leila/Leila_final_render_Gimp_retouch.png
Scaled down the cornea and iris to match the eye lids’ size. I’ve also added reflections to her eyes since I’m re-rendering the whole thing. What do you guys think?

I think it’s better for the eyes.
You are in the good way.

Here’s the latest render. Fixed the eyes. I added Subsurface Scattering and I fixed its lighting. Tell me what you think about it.
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af41/ouro898/Project%20Leila/test_render02.png

This is a fresh Blender render so you’ll see some faulty areas.
