I'm lost

Hello,

It’s been a year since I started using Blender. During this period, I’ve come a long way. I worked at a game studio for 3 months. I am currently unemployed and looking for a job. My problem is that I can’t find a job and I have no idea what to do. I want to improve my portfolio, but I don’t know what to do. I live in Turkey. The game industry here is rapidly developing for about 3 years. Studios used to make hyper-casual games, but the market for hyper-casual games has reached its end. To sum up, what can I do to improve my portfolio? How can I earn money by developing myself in certain areas?

You could try architechtural visualization, product visualization, educational animations, teaching, design for 3D printing to name some.

Hi Sadece

Considering how much history and archaeology there is in your part of the world. What about spending some time focusing on some archaeological and historic reconstruction and digital scanning. Perhaps do some reserch and make some scans of sites yourself and attempt some reconstructions and visualisations of them. Talk to the experts if you can. From my past experience experts although often very busy are super enthusiastic and normally keen to help on projects like this if they can. There must be enough there to inspire some amazing projects for several lifetimes and more.

I am glad to say I have been in North West Turkey a few times. Apart from being amazingly beautiful the amount of archaeology there is mind blowing. I was walking through a whole Roman town to get to the beach. There must be so much that is in urgent need of detailed digital archiving. Also so much potential for reconstructions, visuals and animations to help the research and as public outreach. Your country is also so full of amazing architecture and landscapes old and modern. Perhaps use this as an excuse to travel about a bit too and get out on the road with a backpack and a camera and get a real sense of it all. And also see if there is much going on in this area already in Turkey. I’m sure there must be. Use your circumstance to your advantage. There is so much more out there in digital art and CGI cutting edge and exciting than just video games. But also what about interactive archaeology projects using game technology ?

Anyway I saw you post and this is the first thing that came into my mind. And I mentioned the travel part for a reason too. When I have been most lost in my life I always tried to take off with a backpack.

All the best

It’s a tough spot to be in. I like to think there’s always got to be room for one more artist/animator/programmer/whatever it is you do somewhere. It’s no error to feel like you do. The liminality of it weighs many people down. If we want to talk portfolio, the first thing I notice about it is that it’s small. But that’s to be expected with just 3 months of working someplace. Do you want a career? Or do you want a job? They are not the same thing.

Indeed. Turkey is on my near future list for a motorcycle trip. I can get there on the bike in 36 hours from my front door. Although there’s no shortage of Roman ruins here in Spain, I’m also fascinated with the ancient history of the Greco-Persian wars so Turkey would be amazing to visit.

There’s no way around it, mate, you just have to put the work in and really push yourself. Take advantage of your unemployed status to really focus on building your portfolio.
As mentioned, it really depends on what you want to do. Although there’s no harm in having a diverse portfolio showing you have skills in several areas it can often be better to pick something to specialise in and push your skills in that specialty.

If you’re only doing this for money and not love, then you will find it a lot harder.

thanks for the answer  @Modron

hank you for your response. I live in the city of Canakkale in northwest Turkey, and this is one of the places with the richest architectural diversity in Turkey. I will definitely consider it in the future and if I don’t have any financial difficulties, it could be something I want to do. Hopefully, you will visit these places and you can say hello to me  Thank you again. @Toka

Actually, I want a career because I love the work I do. Before I do everything I can to improve my portfolio, I need to determine what path I need to take to move forward. I am very grateful to everyone here because of your help, my path is clearer now  @Zyl
