I'm wondering why this object will not bevel correctly

I checked the normals (both face and vertex) and they appear to be correct. But when I bevel it, it behaves weirdly. Almost as if the “direction” of the bevel were inverted.

Sorry to be asking such a basic question, but beyond searching the web for answers that I couldn’t find, I am a little confused. The rest of my model appears to bevel correctly. Any advice greatly appreciated.


Select it in object mode and press ctrl+A and apply rotation and scale.

Yeah, a lot of the modifiers and tools depend on the objects scale, size and rotation.
