Image to mesh ?

Anyone know where I can get a image to mesh freeware program ?

In your dreams.
Seriously, image to mesh is not really possible. The image only has the 2d coordinates, missing the Z axis coordinates required for the transition to 3D.

Hi Al_Capone,

Here you can give this one a try :

Hehe… don’t believe everything you see in the movies or on TV. If you did, you’d think you need a rockin’ graphics card and mad joystick skills to hack into a computer system (Think “Masterminds” with Patrick Stewart). You’d also think that the crime scene geeks in the Miami PD all drive hummers, and their office walls are plastered with +60" plasma displays, and DNA tests come back after a few hours (Think “CSI” and “CSI: Miami”). You’d also believe that all Navy legal-weenies are either 1: Top Gun F-14 pilots, who take a ride every now and then to save the fleet, 2: Navy SEAL admirals with daughters that get kidnapped so they have to run to the armory and check out some gear to go kick but, with the Top Gun pilot, of course, 3: Marine Lt.Col’s who can command an embasy detail in an evacuation under fire… since every Marine’s a rifleman… or riflewoman, 4: Shapely blondes who can disarm nuclear weapons, and 5: Bubleheads (that’s submariners) who can track a Russian Kilo better than Jack Ryan in “The Hunt for Red October” (Think “JAG”).

Now, it is perhaps possible to have a program like what you’re talking about, but you’d need several shots, from different angles, with a clear seperation between the object and the background, and still, if the object were complex, it wouldn’t be very good. Most people (with enough resources) who want an easy way to accurately model some object would use a currently available technology: 3D Lazer scans. Along the same vein as what’s used for motion capture, just a bit different.

Actually I believe that, shapely blondes are the ultimate weapon…

Maybe they can’t disarm nuclear weapons, but at least they can stop a whole regiment, of soldiers, even if they are armed to the teeht, with just an eye “blink”…

But seriously, I don’t know… I’ve given a glance at that, photomodeler, program and it seems they are serious…

Still, if this is possible, can this be called, “modeling”???

Sorry, I prefer it the hard way…

Spyros.

The simplest definitions of the word are “to make a model”, and “to serve as a model”, so yes, it’d fall into the first category.

Either way, if such a program did exist, you would have to do it with very simple objects, or the model will be of very poor quality. Also, you’d still need multiple photos from multiple angles.
