Importing explicit vertex normals?

Can Blender deal with explicit vertex normals, or does it always want to generate its own normals? I’ve tried importing from a couple different mesh formats that contained explicit normal info, but when it gets into Blender, the vertex normals specified in the file always seem to be lost.

Is there any way to work with explicitly defined normals in Blender?

Aren’t normals by definition vectors perpendicular to a triangle’s planar surface? So how can there be “custom” normals? Or a vertexes tangent?

Just curious.

vertex normals

the problem is not importing or setting normals, it’s that they’re reset when you enter edit mode and ignored in the render.

also, there is no interface in edit mode to set vertex normals.
