Importing non-blend file formats

Heya!

You know all the great model resources out there? Like 3D Cafe, LWG3D, etc?

Well, they have tons of awesome models I would just love to be able to use…but can’t because I can’t afford the programs they’re designed for.

So, I was wondering, are there any plugins or converters or anything that will allow me to use all sorts of LWO, OBJ, 3DS, etc formats?

If not, is there any hope of someone making some?

Thanks!

Most use an application like Crossroads to convert 3DS and OBJ files to DXF or VRML files. Also search the forums for plug-in information.

I’m using 3D Exploration.

My problem is, once I export to DXF, I don’t know how to import it (Just clicking open, selecting the file, and click Load File doesn’t work. It doesn’t load…just leaves the regular box.), and exporting to VRML 2.0 (With the extension .wrl ) crashes Blender when I try to open it.

Any suggestions?

Are you certain of that? I used to think the same thing, but I discovered most translators make REALLY LARGE models when they save as a DXF. Try importing one of these DXFs and then pulling the camera way back, or hit S and move the mouse real close to the cursor and see if this is the problem.

Nope, I’ve pulled the camera all the way back and zoomed all the way in…nothing…

Sometimes it takes a looong time for Blender to open a large DXF file. Also, I believe Blender only supports VRML 1.0.

Nope, still nothing.

Unfortunately, I can’t export to VRML 1.0…just 2.0

And no matter what I do the DXF wont load up…

So…any more ideas?

press ‘Home’ button:

you see the .dxf file

after that you can scale it
