newbie question but is there a way to get a mesh from one blender file into another blend file? i’ve looked at the import stuff but none of those are blend files. what does append do?
Append is the process of importing Blender data from one .Blend file into another.
Use SHIFT+F1 to append. Use the browser that opens to find the .Blend file the mesh you want to insert is in. Left click the .Blend file, then Left click the Objects folder, right click the objects you want to insert and click Load file.
You might find it useful to name the meshes you want to append, then save the file then append from the other Blend file.

i tried the append but when i go into the blend file and select the mesh i want and add it nothing happens.
Appending the mesh data will do no good until you link it to an object. To skip the linking part, append the Object directly instead of just the mesh data.
