I was thinking today about the universe 'n such. It’s so weird that it can go on forever, and because it’s infinite, that means that there are an infinite amount of planets that can or are supporting life out there somewhere…
The entire universe is so empty. I mean, even though light travels 300000 km/s, it still takes 8 1/2 minutes to reach earth from the sun!!! And the inner planets of the solar system are packed pretty close compared to the outer planets. The solar system’s an insignificant fraction of the galaxy, and there’s an infinite amount of galaxies out there, with an infinite amount of planets with life. That’s completely mind-boggling.
You could travel at 10000000 times the speed of light in any direction and you’d just keep going…forever. (Unless, of course, you run into a star, planet or alien spacecraft! ;))
That the Universe is Infinite in extension is something which still has to be prooved.
All we know is that we can get light coming from things so distant thet it required billions (10^9) of years to get to us.
Actually it is quite close to the date in which the Universe is believed to be born, in some theories.
Philosophically speaking I wod say that the Universe is finite because there is a limit beyond which we cannot see. But this limit has been drawn by the physical rules that says that further objects are invisible because the light they shed since the Beginning of Time is still on its way to us.
But if a tree falls in the forest and there’s noone nearby did it make noise?
And if there is something so distant that it’s light hasn’t reached us yet does it exist?
Don’t know what would confuse me more: To think about the infinity of the universe or to think about what’s behind the border of a finite universe. %|
Schroedingers cat is something I never really understood.:-?
Could I please have a larger brain.
What’s really cool is the idea that the universe circles back on itself. You get on board a rocket and blast off from earth and wind back up there a few trillion years later.
A couple months ago there were very interesting articles in Astronomy and Sky and Telescope, about the end of the universe(If it doesn’t implode!); basicly what they theorise is that since every element decays(think Carbon 14–it’s half-life is 14yrs) there will be a point in time when there will be close to nothing but black holes(Heck! even they will decay–the Hawking radiation!) …As to what’s “outside” the universe=nothing! I mean no elements(we know of ) and no space-time! The only thing that might be there is antimatter/particles…or maybe a billion other universes!
PS: Don’t worry about the end, it will take trillions if not more!
Or, how many things that seem to shine in our night sky have ceased to exist long ago?
Some argue that this infinite universe is expanding. That one hurts my mind. I can not grasp the concept of something that goes on forever as getting larger. I agree with Einstien in as much as if we travel far enough we will end up where we started. I wonder if our starting point will exist when we get back. :-?
Then there’s the theory that the universe is hyperbolic - if you travel for ages you get close to the edge, travel for twice as long you only halve the distance to the edge - you can’t get there however you try
hmm yes i do not think that the universe is linear. i think that it is a complete mess (andd mass ) of time/space, antimatter, dark matter, etc. and as for trying to understand it, up to now we can only make speculations and we can not prove them. I think that the human race will be extinct before we can even get close too proving anything.
well anyway i have some very long theorys on it but they are very long!!!
they dispute the fact that there ever was a BIG BANG, coz i think its bullshit and yet to be proven, and they basicly say that the universe is INFINATE, yet also infinate in scale.
meaning that an ATOM is infact just as important in the universe as a complete GALAXY.
both are the SAME scale (well perhaps not an atom and a galaxy, but somting is equvalent to another thing of unbelievable scale compared to it)
e.g. you give a carbon atom the name carbon because all carbon atoms share similar properties, yet looking ona huge scale galxys or whatever also could be equivalent to carbon atoms, so you may be able to classify all galaxys as elements, therefore having a periodic table for galaxys.
BIG BANG= bullshit
brownian motion = more likely, on a huge(almost infinate) scale somthing could be causing us to thing there was a centre of the universe and a big bang, but really it could be as simple as we were presurised in a botle and the lid was suddenly removed!!!
you never know!!!
Alltaken (i just scratched the surface of my theory)
… i have some very long theorys on it but they are very long!!!
You probably mean hypothesis.
meaning that an ATOM is infact just as important in the universe as a complete GALAXY.
Right, no atoms no galaxies.
e.g. you give a carbon atom the name carbon because all carbon atoms share similar properties…
Same state, same properties. There is no carbon atom Bob or John.
they dispute the fact that there ever was a BIG BANG, coz i think its bullshit and yet to be proven
BIG BANG= bullshit
:o
Please !
What your saying is
theory= not proven = bullshit
So your
theory (hypothesis) = not proven = bullshit
I’d say
theory 1 = not proven = possible
theory 2 = not proven = possible
Theory with more evidences and less inconsistencies wins.
brownian motion = more likely, on a huge(almost infinate) scale somthing could be causing us to thing there was a centre of the universe and a big bang, but really it could be as simple as we were presurised in a botle and the lid was suddenly removed!!!
Weird, guys. I have no theories/hypotheses/whatever-the-plural-is-for-hypothesis on how the universe came to be. I do think, however, that our atoms contain miniature universes, and that we’re just a speck of dust on a policeman’s shirt.
And I’m a believer in chaos theory. (Someone waves hand around in Zaire.) No, I’m not.
like theres very very tiny people living on them. i mean theres no limit to how small something can be. that would be impossible, i expect.
and the universe has to be infinite.but because it is, when you go trough it alot it will seem like its repeating, like lets say that the chance of another solar system exactly like ours to exist is 1/10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000(one in a decagoogol). now, the universe in infinite so the chance is out of infinity. and whatever we do to one number in a fraction or whatever we have to do to the other number, so inf/1dc=inf, and 1*inf=inf, so the chance of it APPEARING that the universe is repeating is infinity out of infinity.
oh, and also, i remember hearing in math class that the number pi has an
infinite number of digits. this is possible, since you can write a really long
number for practicly forever(or until you run out of ram, which happened
to me once, where i made a program that calculated pi and let it run for 5
hours, and when i got back it was on the blue screen saying there isnt
enough memory to run the operation).
so because it has infinite digits, then the number must be infinite because
the more digits it has the bigger it is, so its infinite, know what im saying?
but my math teacher(the old one, if i commented at the new bitchy math
teacher we have, i probably would have gotten a detention equal to pi to
the power of the number of digits it has), so my math teacher just wrote:
4>3.1415…
so how can it be possible for a finite number to be greater than a infinite
one?
coz its infinate in LENGHT
not in size, the longer the number gets the closer to the real value it becoms
and that value is less than 4, it is also less than 3.2
its the hyperbola rule in that with every step you are getting closer to the real value, but every step gets you less closer to the real value than the previous, SO youn never actually get there.
ha ha ha imagine if Pi did actually FINISH somewhere, i mean then calculators would be programed with this huge long number that is EXACT. real weird i say.
