Initial bone placement

Hey everyone,

This is my first go at rigging in blender, so apologies for the newbie question…

I’m trying to draw my upper leg bones in the front view, then go to the side view to move the new knees forward because my mesh has bent knees (to prevent knee lock).

When I do, the upper leg bones spin around the axis that travels through the length of the bone.

How can I adjust the position of the end of a bone without the spinning?

I don’t know what the real answer to this is but for my part I’ve just been ignoring this, and then when I have the bones entirely set where I want them, and before I do any weight painting or vertex grouping or animation, I select all the bones in edit mode and hit control N to recalculate bone rotation. Everything seems to behave as expected.
