inserting .avi into backround

hi, i am trying to insert a .avi video into the backround of blender to integrate some cg into a live action scene. I delete the plane, hit shift F7, load backround image, load the video file (it is an uncompressed .avi video), and i go back to the normal view with the grids and all. My problem is that my video is not inserted into the backround. So i take a peak into the little DOS window blender thingy and it says:

Cant’t find AVI decoder for type : vids/dvsd
AVI ERROR: file is in an illegal or unrecognized format
Error loading avi: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Premiere 6.0 est 1.avi
Unknown fileformat

what do i do? or where can i get this video decoder?
i just installed blender 2.26 yesterday :expressionless:

Your video needs to uncompressed or using the M JPEG codec. You can download it from here:

http://www.seesystems.com/curt/jpeg_avi_codec.zip

u said it needs to be uncompressed or M JPEG but i am using uncompressed footage. i had just captured it through premiere from my camera.

Are you sure it’s uncompressed? Capture card applies automatic compress usually.

anyway, Blender (starting in version 2.25) supports all the installed codecs (with Windows, don’t know for sure with the rest), so the MJPG/RAW limit is no longer correct.

I am not so sure about that Theeth. I think the additional codec support is only for rendering. For textures (and presumably background images) it is MJPEG or raw. I must check to be sure but I just tried this recently with 2.26 and this was the case…

Most probably your .avi is in DV format which is NOT the same as raw. You’ll have to export it from Premiere with video compressor set to ‘none’.

i just tried that right now, exporting the clip with compressor set to “none” and blender still wont open it…
?

I just tried with 2.26 (albeit the lattest cvs update, but it works with 2.25 too, so…) and it loads DivX AVIs correctly. You have to press the Movie button in the texture setting, of course.

sumosanta: sorry, I don’t think I can help you more than that :frowning:

Sumosanta,

I see you have used the Shift F7 load background image method, but have you also loaded the same AVI into the Backbuf section of the Render Buttons(Left hand side of Render buttons). I have found that this needs to be the same as the AVI file you loaded into the Shift F7 window, so you can see the AVI in the render.

Regarding your vids/dvsd codec, I did a search in google and found this info about codecs and a thing called Gspot 2 codec identifier Click to go there, Russian website

Get Gspot here.

Hope this helps,

Sonix.

Right-click on your uncompressed avi, go properties and click “details”

Check that it says “Uncompressed” after “Video:”

ok…i tried loading the .avi raw through the shift F7 way and then loading it as a backbuff image in the render window…it doesnt work. I downloaded Gspot check the vid files…they are correct or fine or whatever.
Theeth: when u say it worked, exactly what steps did u take to put it in?
and in doing it this way…will i be able to see the video in the window or only on the shape or whatever when i render it?

Sorry mate I couldn’t help, me now stumped. hhmmph :<
