Inside a Mirrored Sphere

I set up the following:

  • Create a 4 unit sphere.
  • Create a .25 unit box inside the centre of the sphere.
  • Place a camera inside the sphere, oriented facing the box.
  • Add a spotlight behind the camera.
  • Make the inside of the sphere a mirror material.

The question I am trying to answer is: if you were floating inside a perfectly spherical mirror, what would you see?

The results I obtained were not quite what I envisioned. Any ideas what the result really should look like?

I’d like to see your results. It’s difficult to visualize but I think you would get multiple reflections of the cube going off in several directions.

I think the problem you have there is getting light into the camera. I’m guessing the only part you would see a reflection on is the section facing the camera.

Think in terms of how a satellite dish works, focussing the reflected rays to a point.

can you upload a file so we can experiment with it !

happy 2.5

maybe try using luxrender, or an unbiased rendering enigne, then the results would be more accurate
