First, I’m sorry if this isn’t the right place to post this. I’ve been lokking around the forums at user-created art, and I’ve been seeing people be really jerks to the newbs. Before I react, I wanted to know why it’s so important to decimate any unprofessional, or even bad, art. Btw, I’m new to Blender, too. My art hasn’t been insulted yet, but I’m sort of afraid to continue creating and posting. Comments?
Please provide examples. Are you talking about insults, or critiques?
Insults, yeah, they don’t serve much purpose. Critiques, however, are there to help the artist improve their work. It is [or at least, I think it should be] the main reason for posting anything to a forum such as this one.
I love the critiquing; it helps everyone. I’m not going to use examples, but I’m talking about people saying things like “this art just ruins the forums” or “you have no clue what you’re doing; stop posting here.” Does in hurt Blender/elysiun in any way the display some untalented art amongst all the other great works? I got the impression that “we’re being watched.”
I’ve followed these boards from the time Elysiun was started - from the time we had the old blender.nl site… the past few years - it seems the program’s expanding popularity has spawned even more juvenile behaviors among users of the sites. The forums you spoke of used to be filled with incisive insights, helpful suggestions… more of a sense of fun and bonding… How many people using the boards today have heard the conmcept of “mindshare” which Blender’s creator steered us to many years ago… I used to post in the art forums years ago - and I always tried to find something good to say… there are all “kinds” of art - good or bad, professional or amateur… In the end - just the fact that someone expressed themselves and put their “thoughts” out there in the ether… I respect that.
I guess what I’m saying is who cares what the idiots say… If you find no value in their comments (sometimes critical comments are valuable - but even so - they should have a point and not needlessly attack talent or technique) - so be it… ask someone else, somewhere else. Don’t let a few netjerks pointcasting from their bedrooms in the 'rents house get you down. If they were so good themselves they’d be too busy making millions off of their own artwork to bother posting in such a column.
Keep on blendin’ Man!
Well, sometimes the “idots” are really freakin’ awesome at Blending, but as long as I have some people to share my opinion with, it’s cool. Thanks.
There’s a very active thread already about exactly this:
