Perhaps a better title for the chip would be Raptor Dozer, because this is one of the smallest performance leaps in the history of Intel products. On the flip side, the big leap you will actually get is in TDP, this chip is H.O.T and it will require a minimum PSU power of 1 kilowatt or more if paired with a higher end GPU. This continues the trend of Intel chips that has been engineered to run as hot as coffee, rockets, and comets (except now it is even hotter).
Looking at Youtube, it appears just about every review of the chip range is tepid at best and a firm ‘Do not buy’ at worst. When Gamer’s Nexus decides to make jokes instead of emphasizing what the chip can do, you know a misstep took place. To make matters worse, some of the rumors for Arrow Lake do not sound that promising either (so enjoy the upcoming Ryzen 8xxx series because Ryzen 9xxx might see some nice fat price hikes from lack of competition).
Outstanding news. This 14 series chip will hopefully cause the 13 series prices to drop; then more people can purchasing the 13, which for DCC appears to be basically just as fast as the 14 in nearly every way.
9 Ghz on Raptor Lake cores would smoke even the Threadrippers, but it would be an astronomically difficult task to make it run like that long enough for a render (a single render, not even an animation).
AMD Dozers were also great overclockers, but that doesn’t mean they were great chips to have. My FX 8300 worked fine for me, but I also didn’t expect miracles of it.
I had a 860k and it ran just about everything I needed pretty decently, really. The main advantage of it was for about a year or two it had the highest price/performance ratios of any CPU, being ahead of 2nd place by 4-5 times.
