In my town, we have an anual technology fair/competition. This year me and some Blender noobs from school decided to make a game or realtime app for the competition. I did this last year ( I was a noob myself then with no help whatsoever). The game was bad, It wasnt educational (skateboarding game) so I only got third place. This year, we have made a walkthrough of the library that teaches you as you go about:
Non-Fiction and the Dewey Decimal System
Fiction
and Computer Resources and the InternetWe are positive through the visual appeal (I hope) and the educational qualities, we will do good at the fair and “take home the gold”.
Screenshots:
The main desk (note the computer screen : )…
…some shelves…
…a nice reading area…
…and another area shot.
This is out librarian. Her name is Emma, shes animated,
and shes a typing maniac. seriously.
I hope you like it. More screens and an .exe to come:eyebrowlift2: . Criticism and comments welcome.
UPDATE!!
Here’s an updated .exe that includes fully functional nonfiction “Learning Portal” (the yellow one) and the other
two, but they dont work. The computer one orta does, but you cant get out of it, so dont get in!
Looks good, although hard to judge from screenies alone. My one major critique is the apparent massive amount of resources needed to run it, why you’re running at 2fps I’ll never know, the program doesn’t look that intensive. Secondly when trying to simulate any concept of life, a lightmap goes a long way to improving the over-all effect. Although I’d beable to better judge the program with a file ^^
it does have a lightmap (you just cant see it in the screens…)
2nd the whole 2fps is because I was working at the school. the school computers suck, except for the new one Im working on now, which is what I am using for the walkthrough also now. It now runs at 20 FPS which is plenty for this small app.
looks pretty good, but 20 FPS on a fairly good computer isn’t that good, but it’s blender’s game engine so it will take some optimization. I got one question thats a bit off topic, would you happen to have the blend for the skateboard game? I’ve always been interested in skateboarding and skateboarding games
Looks like you’re achieving what you set out to do; one point scored! Another point for fitting textures. -1/2 point for the un-textured chairs. jk
I like the design, the friendly warm feel it has to it. You’ve probably already done this, but if your textures aren’t powers of 2 it could really be slowing down your frame rate.

I think I accidentally set the FPS to 20, so dont sweat it. when I post the exe, youll see that it runs fine…I do have the skate blend, but I must warn you, it was my first game, and It has like a million billion trillion poly and verts in everything. it barely runs. it really sux.

being a huge book fanatic, I love your Idea. Ive always looked at netflicks and thought eLit? or Netbooks? basically an online library.

I am honored to have your approval, you forum guru you. no seriously! The chair map wouldn’t bake my AO that I had (which rocked), but Im still workin on it. BTW, thats very interesting about the power of 2 thing.
Doesn’t work at all in 2.43 and the textures aren’t packed. But thats an old file.
Your library walkthrough looks nice. Like Stu_Flowers said, use images with a power of 2 because the rasterizer needs to resize them to powers of two if not already there. This eats up processing power (in one of your screenshots the rasterizer is at more than 95%) and slows down your game. A blend would be nice so we can explore the library in realtime.
Interesting little demo you got there. Textures could use some work, and the camera’s mouse sensitivity feels too low. The librarian could use some work too.
Other than that, this is a pretty good job. You could see a drastic improvement in graphics if you decided to render bake it. Actually I hope you do release a .blend just so I can see how it looks with render baking on it
