Interior of model does not work with lighting

Hey everyone. I’m currently working on a low poly model of an old factory, using high contrast toon shading for lighting. The exterior of the building is looking great, but for some reason, when I go to start working on the interior of the building, it always renders completely black. At first I thought it was the glass material I’m using for the windows that was somehow preventing the light from coming through, but deleting the glass, even putting a light directly inside the building, still renders completely black, even though when looking at the model in shaded mode through the viewport shows the exterior lighting passing through as it should.

Is there something I’m forgetting? Thanks.

Very possibly, you are forgetting that planes have “only one side.” (The “surface-normal vector” of the plane points toward the “front,” and if viewed from behind, the plane doesn’t exist.)

Construct the portions of the factory that will actually be viewable, as a second set of planes whose surface-normals face “inside.” Place them “ever-so-slightly inside of,” but not precisely superimposed upon, the “outside-facing” planes. You will “dress” those planes (textures, materials, etc.) separately.

Don’t bother to construct or to model anything that will not actually appear on-screen from the camera points-of-view that you have determined you will actually use in the show.

I thought that might be it, but then I remembered I already had most of the interior walls as another object to cover up the extrusions I had made. I tried flipping their normals and still, nothing was lit. Even adding a brand new object placed inside the factory, the new object is not lit either. Its like light cannot get inside this building…

Hmm…no replies…I guess I’ll just model the interior separately, unless someone else has any ideas. I can post the file if that would help

So apparently light DOES pass through now, as long as the glass is deleted (dunno how I got that working but hey I’ll roll with it.

So I guess my question now is how do I set it so that the lamp will pass through the glass material and illuminate the interior of the factory?

Make sure you have the TranShadow box checked for all objects that would be receiving light through the windows and the glass surrounding the light, with that checked objects can receive light going through transparent materials.
