Intro to YAfray?

Hey all,
ok I am going to sound like a total newb here but I am curious what YAYFray is. I know it is a “ray tracer” I was hoping someone could be more specific. IS it only for lighting or is a completely different 3d animator that can plug into Blener? IS it a character or object generator? I am just curious what exactly it does. (I don’t want to spend time with it unless I need it’s function)

Its a rendering engine. For creating the final image of a scene, primarily. It incorporates many advanced techniques which Blender’s internal engine cannot currently perform. For more info, visit its website at http://www.yafray.org .
